What is the average size of a man's penis?

In the actual course see the segment "Does Size Matter"
for more tips to satisfy a woman regardless of the actual penis size.

Written Answer (transcript of audio):

STEPHANIE: What is the average size of the man's penis?

BART: Well, I think every man thinks that they're a little smaller than they should be, and they don't know, and then they see movies, and they think these guys in the porn movies are average. They are not average.

STEPHANIE: Right. Right.

BART: There are four different research studies that we looked up to find out the average.

STEPHANIE: Okay.

BART: And they all deviate from each other. So there is no agreement on them. But I think we can get within about an inch to establish and average.

STEPHANIE: Okay.

BART: Let's start with the smallest ones. One of the researchers interviewed 200 men, and the average penis size was 5.4 inches. Now, here's how they measure this. This is not from the bottom of the penis. This is at the very top. Let's say that you had no hair whatsoever in your pubic region. So you start at the very top of the penis where your bladder is and you go straight on top.

STEPHANIE: Okay. So right from where the skin meets the beginning of the shaft and then measure forward.

BART: Right, straight out. I mean so if you had a 12 inch tape measure, you would put it right on top and balance, and it's 5.4 inches. Now, the second survey I read was 150 men and the guy actually used some kind of chemical to get them aroused, and the average was 5.7.

STEPHANIE: Okay.

BART: But you're thinking 5.7 inches. Another research, which is probably the most famous sex research, which is the McKenzie Research, which was really famous in the early '70s, they interviewed thousands of people who had all kinds of sex. I think that was when they discovered the "G=Spot", oh my gosh. Their average was 6.16 inches. And finally another research with 2800 men said the average is 6.4. But they also clarified that there's a little standard deviation, and for those who are mathematicians means that, yes, 6.4, but it deviated 1.1 inches in each direction.

STEPHANIE: Quite a variance from one study being 5.4 all the day to being 6.4. As an average, you would think that if they used a cross section, they'd come up with pretty much the same averages.

BART: So, again, it really depends. So let's just say between 5.4, 6.4, you are now in the middle of the road.

STEPHANIE: What about girth being measured all the way around the circumference.

BART: If you were take a tape measure like you measure your clothes and you start and wrap it around it, that's the circumference. And so you wrap it around it and then straighten it back up, and the average is approximately 5.2 circumference, which is the circumference like travelling around the globe, it's like around the equator, all the way around it.

STEPHANIE: And then also that varies from time to time, a man's erection could be larger some days than others based on other factors. If you smoke, that decreases the blood flow to the penis. Some other things like drugs and other chemicals possibly show how excited he is, generally?

BART: I mean there's definitely a difference in how frequently you have sex. So if you have frequent sex, every day, you may notice your penis is bigger. And if you have it once and then three months later you drop your pants, then it's I mean so it's dual change. And of course if it's a big concern for you, yeah, go ahead and measure it. There is no harm in that, and then look at the surveys and compare it. Again, if you're 5 inches or over, or 4 1/2 inches or over, it's not going to make-or-break the deal, guys. She's not going to get up and leave and say, you know what, your penis is not big so I'm going to have to break up with you. That's not realistic. If you're 1 inch, may be we can consider some options. But I find that most people that we've talked to in the surveys and therapy that they've got average size penises, but they feel they're too small. And that's not necessarily a valid concern.

STEPHANIE: Right.
